Murder: Charges Upgraded For 34-Year-Old NJ Son After Dad Dies

Charges have been upgraded for a 34-year-old Sussex County man whose father died days after he shot him, authorities said.

Donald Simpson, 70 was initially flown to Morristown Medical Center in critical condition after he was shot multiple times by his son, Daniel Simpson, at his home in Wantage on Jan. 22, as previously reported by Daily Voice. 

Simpson died of his injuries on Wednesday, Jan. 25,  Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said. Two dogs were found dead with gunshot wounds inside the home, New Jersey State Police said at the time.

New Jersey State Police troopers found the younger Simpson's vehicle on Struble Road near Route 246 and recovered two firearms. He was initially charged with attempted murder, Murray said. In addition to murder, Daniel is charged with two counts of animal cruelty, Murray said. 

The case remains under investigation, Murray said.
